In Case of Emergency

April 21st, 2010

It’s cool, summer day and you’re driving off to somewhere when your car breaks down. Here’s what you should know. Going on a road trip for the summer can be a wonderful experience. You’re in control of your itinerary, and you’re free to stop anywhere you want to explore the sights up close. But when the soaring summer temperatures kick in and your car kicks out, knowing what to do will save you the hassles of a trip gone wrong.

You get a flat. Slow down gradually, and move off to side of the road. Turn off your car’s engine, turn on your hazard lights, and pull the handbrake. Select reverse for manual cars and “P” for automatic cars. Place a rock or a brick diagonally opposite the damage tire to stop the car from moving. Locate your spare tire, car jack, and wrench. Raise the car jack until the flat tire is completely off the ground, then remove the loosened nuts. Position the spare tire over the tire over the tire drum and screw the nuts back on.
